Old Bear

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008
A book about the seasons.  Old Bear goes to hibernate late in the winter season; it's already snowing.  He dreams of being young again and of experiencing the changing seasons for the first time as an imaginative little cub.

Water color paint and ink.  The use of color in the book is beautiful!  Kevin Henkes uses his mediums very effectively.  I especially like the autumn page bat that could be because I consider that particular season to be my favorite.

The story is extremely simple, but imaginative.  Child-like, without being childish.  On the back jacket cover, some of Kevin Henkes' other works are mentioned.  After reading and enjoying Old Bear I am interested in checking out these other titles from our local library!

Disclosure: This book was graciously sent to me by HarperCollins Publishing.

Old Bear

By Kevin Henkes With old timey painting and subtle but vivid colors, this book is darling! Old Bear sleeps all snug in his cave for the winter. Old Bear dreams about being a cub again. He dreams of Spring. Then he dreams of summer and raining blueberries! He dreams of the colors of autumn. He dreams of the chill of winter. When he finally wakes up he has to find out if he is still dreaming. This book opens the opportunity to talk about the seasons. How does Old Bear feel, see and smell in the fall? The winter? The spring or summer? Which season do you like best? I would suggest this book for early to intermediate readers. The repetitive words would be a terrific learning tool. Old Bear would be a great addition to the library of a first or second grader. For ordering information clickon the photo of the book above or here.
